Two basketball players have been named Bulldogs of the Week after their performances this past Saturday. Tyra Aska of the women’s team and Devin Pugh of the men’s squad become the newest additions to the weekly honor brought to you by 95.5 ‘The Coyote’ where you can listen to SWOSU Athletics on the dial.
Aska (Meridian, Okla.) scored a career high 29 points in SWOSU’s 84-78 comeback victory over Northeastern State. Trailing by 12 with one minute to go in the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs rallied to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter and after gaining the advantage, never looked back due in large part to Aska’s efforts. As the game was deadlocked at 67-67 with 5:03 left to play in the game, Aska scored nine points from that point on that answered NSU scores every time, shutting down the Riverhawk momentum. The freshman scored 13 in the final quarter and 23 in the second half after starting the game slow with only 6 points in the opening 20 minutes. She ended with 29 points, a team season high, on 13-16 shooting (81%) including a perfect 3-3 from three-point land and added four rebounds with two assists and steals on the afternoon. The win propels SWOSU to a 3-2 overall record heading into Thursday’s (Dec. 1) conference game against Arkansas-Monticello.
Pugh (Phenix City, Ala.) tallied a team-high 14 points against Central Missouri on 5-8 (63%) from the floor including 4-5 (80%) from the three-point line in the loss against the Mules. Pugh recorded his fourth double-digit scoring mark of the season and added on to his team-leading three-point shot tally which now sits at 14 through five games, while also contributing four rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. The junior also leads his squad in three-point percentage by knocking down deep balls at a 45-percent rate. Pugh will look to continue that scoring against Arkansas-Monticello, when the Bulldogs play the Boll Weevils on Thursday looking for their first win of the season.
